Why Those Tweets You Tweet Just Aren’t Working

You believe you’re doing everything right. You tweet multiple times throughout the week, you tweet the “right” people, you use #hash tags so your tweets can be searched, and you share interesting articles, but nothing seems to work. You still don’t have many followers and the ones you do have, just don’t talk at all! What to do! Here are some reasons why your tweets just aren’t working.

Tweet_tweet1. You aren’t promoting others~ The culture of Twitter is very much tit-for-tat. The more you support others, the more they will support you. It’s easy to fall into the mindset that you have to be promoting yourself all the time. In reality, Twitter is a tool you should be using to find allies! To find allies who will support you, you need to reach out and show support for them. Did you read a great blog post? Pass it on to your followers, being sure to tag the Twitter user who wrote the blog! Pay a fellow tweeter a nice compliment, and respond to their prompts.

2. You have HUGE gaps in your timeline activity~ This is a big one, especially if you’re the kind of person who waits for things to pile up and then does them all at once. You need to be tweeting regularly, and every day, for it to be effective. People look to follow others that regularly tweet, re tweet and engage with their followers. This shows people you are actually interested in them and aren’t just tweeting because you feel you have to.

3. There is just no “Uumph” in your posts~ Are you repeatedly sending out the same blog entries over and over again, without sharing new kinds of information? Are you using the same two #hash tags over and over again? Are you ever responding to the prompts and tweets of others? There should be enough variety in your posts to keep it interesting! My recipe is at least one tweet per day responding to someone else’s tweet (make sure to tag them in the tweet!), at least one tweet per day promoting someone else (again, make sure you tag them in the tweet), at least one RT (re tweet) per day, at least one tweet per day sharing an interesting article or video, at least one tweet per day promoting yourself. This recipe might not work immediately but it does work if you stay consistent and find mutually interesting individuals to follow. They will like what you tweet and in turn you will like their tweets as well.

So, what have you found to be effective in gaining the right kind of followers? What doesn’t work? Please share below.

  1. Great post, Debbie. There is definitely a direct link between how much you help others and how much activity you receive back. Sometimes I’m sure I’ve got the mix right…others, well we keep trying. :-)

  2. yep / it is time consuming but works!

Great post and very helpful – thank you!

  4. Great post Debbie! I get bombarded daily with solicitations from people or companies that claim they can generate thousands of new followers for me in a matter of days using their spam techniques. It’s refreshing to see someone like yourself explaining how to grow your followers the “old fashioned” way – by truly connecting with other people.

  5. Thanks for sharing this, Debbie.

  6. Twitter like all social media is a lot of work. Finding time to “tweet” seems to be my biggest problem.
    Jae Mac, I’m Just Sayin’…(Damn!)

  7. Thanks, great post and something all Twitter newbies should read!

  8. Simple but true, I don’t think tweeting is supposed to be complicated, but it takes time and for a solo business operator all part of small business marketing efforts. Especially checking out a range of articles before retweeting or tweeting
